Getting a Baton in the Correct Length
Choosing a twirling baton in the perfect length is easy! And, it is important as well. A correctly sized baton is easier to use and twirl, and helps to ensure fun and success for the twirling student or athlete. Here are instructions of what to do.
How do I choose the best size twirling baton?
Twirling batons are available in a very large variety of lengths. It is important to select the best size of baton for ease of handling, and for an ideal visual effect. A baton that is too long may be cumbersome, get caught on the body, and be difficult to twirl. A twirling baton that is too short for the twirler can cause awkward handling and an odd appearance.
Professionally manufactured, top quality twirling batons are typically available from 14 inches (35 cms) to 32 inches (81 cms). Most batons styles are available in 1 inch increments, so an ideal fit is readily achieved. Some of the baton brands are not manufactured in the very shortest and very longest lengths, but there is a terrific variety of types of batons made in nearly every length! Twirling batons are made to fit the youngest toddlers as well as very tall adults.
How to measure for the correct baton length
It's simple! Have the person stand straight and extend an arm straight ahead, parallel to the floor. Use a yard stick or tape measure. Take the measurement from the base of the neck just above the shoulder, all of the way out to the tip of the middle finger. If number is in between whole inches, choose the larger measurement. For example, if your measurement is 24 1/2 inches, select a 25 inch baton. In other words, size up.
The twirler should be measured by someone else, if feasible. It is possible to take your own measurement, but a little challenging!
An alternative method to measure for a baton is from under the armpit out to the end of the middle finger. In our experience, this measurement results in a baton selection that is a bit short. However, if your baton teacher or coach recommends this technique, certainly follow their advice!
What if I cannot take a measurement? The baton is for a gift and I want it to be a surprise!
Have you found the perfect gift and you don't want to spoil the surprise? Is that twirler sound asleep and you really need to order the baton tonight? Does your twirler live in another city and you are unable to physically take a measurement? Well...you can certainly make a guesstimate!
Based on age, here are some good estimates for selecting the best twirling baton length:
Age 1-4: 18 inches (45 cms)
Age 5-7: 20 inches (51 cms)
Age 8-10: 22 inches (56 cms)
Age 11-12: 24 inches (61 cms)
Age 13-14: 26 inches (66 cms)
Age 15+: 28 inches (71 cms)
If the twirler is tall for their age, add 1-2 inches. If the twirler is small for their age, subtract 1-2 inches.
Selecting a baton length by "guessimate" may not provide the accuracy of taking an actual measurement. When you receive the baton, keep it in it's sealed plastic packaging and do not remove the cardboard hang tag. Check the baton size against the twirler's arm and even try some basic twirling while the baton is still in it's package. An unopened baton can still be exchanged for a different length.
Follow the guidance of your baton twirling coach or instructor
If the twirler is working with a baton teacher or coach, certainly consult with her or him about your baton choice. If the twirler is a new, beginning baton student who is taking a class, talk to the teacher for sizing suggestions.
Otherwise, use these guidelines and plan on a rewarding and fun twirling experience with a baton that fits correctly.
